Leslie Forster (1916-2014)
Leslie Forster, raised on Tyneside, worked as a rent collector in 1930s Gateshead, an experience that, along with seeing his parents care for his disabled brother without state help, led to his lifelong commitment to socialism and the Labour Party.
In 1939, he joined pacifist groups such as the Peace Pledge Union and became a conscientious objector during World War II, citing his Christian faith as the reason for his stance. He joined Friends House Quaker Meeting in 1947, where he warmly welcomed newcomers, including gay Friends during a time of societal exclusion.
In 1966, Leslie co-founded the Camden Community Housing Association (CHA), which managed over 1,400 housing units, including projects for special needs and elderly residents. Leslie Forster House, built in 1994 next to Friends House, was named in his honour.
