Marjorie Sykes (1905-1995)
Marjorie Sykes, born in Mexborough, Yorkshire, became a Quaker in 1936 and spent much of her life in India. A teacher by training, she moved to India in 1928 and worked to break down social barriers between Indians and Europeans.
Marjorie Sykes met Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore, becoming involved in the Indian independence movement and supporting Gandhi’s efforts to improve village life. She also trained volunteers for Vinoba Bhave’s nonviolent ‘peace army’. After British rule ended in 1947, she worked as a mediator in Nagaland, investigating conflicts.
Her legacy aligns with Quaker efforts for peace, which continue worldwide today.
