Sarah Fell (1642-1714)
Sarah Fell, daughter of Margaret and Thomas Fell, was born at Swarthmoor Hall in Cumbria, a key Quaker centre in the seventeenth century, and still a popular meeting place today.
In 1663, Sarah accompanied her mother, Margaret Fell, on a missionary trip to Devon and Cornwall. When Margaret was imprisoned the following year for allowing Quaker worship in her home, Sarah managed the family estate, carefully recording farm income and expenses, setting a standard of transparency.
Her detailed records from 1673–1678 are preserved in The Household Account Book of Sarah Fell, showcasing her role in managing the estate and founding Ulverston’s grammar school. She also served as clerk for the Swarthmoor women’s meeting until moving south to marry William Meade.
