Waldo Williams (1904-1971)
Waldo Williams, born in Pembrokeshire in 1904, is considered one of the most important Welsh poets of the 20th century. Raised Baptist, he became a Quaker in the 1950s. His spiritual experiences inspired his famous poem “The Two Fields,” which later influenced the redesign of Friends House garden.
A committed pacifist, Williams registered as a conscientious objector during World War II and later refused to pay income tax in protest against military service, leading to his imprisonment. In 1959, he stood as a Plaid Cymru candidate. His major poetry collection, Dail pren/The Leaves of the Tree, was published in 1956.
